The Eatsome Project
Eat a variety of foods
Choose foods from each of the five food groups - fruit and vegetables, bread, cerals and potatoes, fish, meat and alternatives, fatty and sugary foods and milk products. A third of your diet should be fruit and vegetables and a third bread, cereal and potatoes. Aim for the proportions shown on the Balance of Good health.
Have meals and snacks based on bread, potatoes and cereals
Eat all types and choose high fibre kinds whenever you can. Foods in this group include breakfast cereals, rice, pasta, noodles, cornmeal, chapattis, nan and pitta bread.
Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
Choose fresh, frozen, tinned or dried. Avoid adding sugar or salt or choosing fruit in syrup.
Include meat, fish or pulses and dairy produce eachday
Moderate amounts of meat, fish and alternatives are needed. This group includes eggs, nuts, beans and pulses. Fat intake can be minimised by choosing lean meat and using less fat and oil in cooking. Fat intake can be minimised by choosing lean meat and using less fat and oil in cooking. Dairy produce includes milk, yogurt, cheese and fromage frais. Low fat varieties such as skimmed or semi-skimmed milk are the best choices.
Keep fatty, sugary and salty foods to a minimum
Avoid adding fat and /or sugar to foods. Only have foods like cream, chocolate, crisps, biscuits, pastry, cake, puddings, rich sauces and sweets occasionally rather than every day.
If you need to, use a little salt in cooking or add a small amount to meals - not both! Foods like crisps and other salty snacks, smoked meats and bacon, canned or packet soups and vegetables and ready meals can be high in salt. Cut down if you can.
Enjoy your food
Food plays an important part in life. Eating should be an enjoyable and pleasurable experience for everyone.
Other groups such as the Under 5's, the elderly, pregnant and women who are breastfeeding, the sick and those requiring special therapeutic diets are likely to have different nutritional needs.

The Eatsome Project
What can we offer groups?
What can we offer individuals?
The aim of the Eatsome project is to promote
healthy eating and the 5 A DAY policy across
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
What is the Eatsome Project?
The Eatsome Project works throughout Cornwall with all age groups promoting healthy eating through practical and realistic sessions designed to encourage groups and individuals to eat more healthily to improve their health. The project is hosted by Central Cornwall Primary Care Trust.
Why are we here?
Coronary Heart Disease and Cancer account for 60% of deaths in the UK and Diabetes, Stroke and Obesity are on the increase. Part of the government's strategy to improve health is to improve our diet.

Useful Websites
How can you promote healthy eating in your community?
Set up a cookery club to try new recipes, learn from each other, make cheaper meals, and socialise.
Start growing vegetables either in your own garden or window box, or as part of an allotment group. You could even set up a vegetable swap scheme with neighbours for more variety.
Set up a food co-operative and reap the benefits of local crops from farmer's markets, farm shops, roadside vendors or local wholesalers. Buying in bulk and in season will reduce the cost of the produce you buy.
Join the Health Promotion library and find out about healthy eating and healthy living. Think about how to make it practical in your life.
Encourage local retailers to stock more healthy options and local produce.
Provide healthy options, such as fruit, when you have group meetings or at luncheon clubs.

Peer Education
We work with communities, parents and children on understanding key, consistent messages about healthy eating. We run sessions with groups and promote the 5 A DAY message through events and seminars.
Cooking Sessions
We offer a two-hour session per week over a period of 4-6 weeks. This includes a practical session to gain confidence in basic cooking and to understand the key messages around healthy eating. Other topics can be covered such as budgeting, food storage, healthier packed lunches etc, see below.
Budgeting and Shopping
Eating well on a tight budget can be hard, but is not impossible. Through supportive workshops we show that healthy eating does not always have to be the expensive option.
Ideas for packed lunches
We aim to provide advice on healthier options for snacks and lunches. We have demonstration packed lunch boxes that give an idea of the financial and health benefits of a healthier, tastier lunchbox
Healthy Eating & Tasting Sessions
One off practical sessions covering the key messages of healthy eating and discussing tips and solutions to making changes both for individuals and their families.
Resources
The Health Promotion Library carries many healthy eating resources, including leaflets, interactive games and puzzles. To join, please call 01209 313218.
The Eatsome Project has smoothie makers, portable cookers, hobs and cooking equipment that can be borrowed. We also have toolkits containing useful information and practical tips for work with under 5's and running your own cooking sessions.
Adult sized vegetable costumes are available free on loan from the Healthy Boxes project. These include a carrot, swede, mushroom, pea. To borrow please contact 01736 811124.
Support
We are available to support individuals and groups to put in place healthier practices within their organisations e.g. to set up and run cooking sessions or improve the balance of foods they have on sale.
We have produced guidelines for developing healthy eating within your community group. These give practical help in making sustainable changes for the better.
Grants
Through the Health Promotion Small Grant Scheme community groups can apply for funding of up to £200-£300 (dependent on district). There are a number of health and wellbeing priorities to apply under, one of which is for healthy eating. We can offer support to develop healthy eating projects. For further details and an application form, call Suzy or Alex on 01209 313 419.
Over the past few years we have supported a number of groups to develop healthy eating projects. These have varied from cooking sessions, to growing clubs, community banquets to food co-ops.
There have been fantastic outcomes from these mini projects, which have embedded healthy eating into the community.
A few examples of unexpected outcomes from the grant scheme
. We have, as a direct result, introduced healthy eating and physical activity as a core part of our curriculum, as the projects highlighted a real need" WILD - allotment, cooking and banquet grants
. "The communal kitchen and equipment is being used regularly by service users. More service users are buying healthier products, fresh rather than convenience" Stonham Housing Association - cooking equipment grant
. "Parents have also become more aware of what children eat at home and children are asking for healthier foods! Parents/carers have asked for a healthy snack provision rota to be put in place; this starts after Easter. Thank you." Stepping Stones Pre-school -cooking equipment grant
CHEFS award
The Cornwall Healthier Eating & Food Safety (CHEFS) Award aims to recognise food businesses within the County that are protecting their customers' health and well-being.
In an award-winning food business the customer will be guaranteed an opportunity to make healthier food choices and can be confident that high standards of food hygiene are maintained. In addition, the Award aims to promote the use of local produce and encourages businesses to adopt no-smoking areas.
The Award has been created by Environmental Health Practitioners within the six Cornish district councils, in partnership with the Eatsome Project.
For more information about the award, or if you are a business that wishes to take part, please contact your local Environmental Health team.
