Saltash HeLP meet on the 1st Thursday of every month at Saltash.

For a while, HELP lost many of its members, and the turn out at meetings was poor. We have worked hard to revive the group, and have now elected a steering group with a Chair, minutes secretary and speaker-organiser; the format for the meetings has changed; we have decided to invite a speaker of the group’s choosing each month; and have revisited the mission statement and aims of the group. The venuehas also changed to the Wesley Methodist Church in Saltash, which is very comfortable.

Torpoint CHAT meet last Friday of every month at the Torpoint Clinic for a networking session.

Liskeard Healthy Living Forum have changed their name to Liskeard CHAIN.Community Health and Information Network) They meet on the last Wednesday of the month for venue and times contact Liz Webb on 01579 348844.
The January 2002 meeting was used to identify projects for the year. After much discussion, and taking into account the needs identified in the pilot Health Needs Assessment (July 2001), the group agreed that Play provision for children and young people was one area which needed to be further investigated; benefit take up in Caradon was the other. A sub-group for both areas was appointed, who agreed to meet and do a presentation at the next meeting.
The pilot Liskeard to Derriford Hospital bus service started on 14 January 2002. It runs twice a week, on Monday and Wednesday afternoons directly between Liskeard and Derriford, stopping at Tideford and Landrake en route. We have publicised the bus as much as possible, and take up is increasing. The pilot scheme runs for six months initially.

The Walking for Health Group - set up through CHAIN - has been meeting now since 29 August 2001, on a weekly basis. We have found that changing the venue to Lux Park Leisure Centre has meant that, when the weather is too grim to walk far, we can at least sit in a warm cafe and have a cuppa and a chat. Group numbers are slowly but surely increasing, and we have a small core group who are very committed.

We have talked about a sponsored walk around the time of the London Marathon, but nothing is decided yet!

St Neot

A small committee has been formed in St Neot, who are producing a monthly community newsletter.

Polperro

As a result of the Community Health and Information Day in November 2001, a public meeting was held in Polperro on 26 February 2002 in order to gauge the interest for a Parish Plan to identify and address issues of concern in the Parish. We had an extremely lively meeting, with over 100 people attending. Marita Ward from CRCC talked about what could be achieved through these Plans, and we formed a steering group to take this forward, with 21 people volunteering (including 6 young people). The first meeting of the steering group is on Tuesday 19 March in Polperro.

District Forum

The first meeting of the S E Cornwall District Forum will be held on Monday 18 March 2002 in the Public Hall Liskeard. This forum is to bring together representatives from all healthy living forums in the area so that information can be shared, projects and activities co-ordinated, training needs identified and addressed etc.

Community Childcare

As I mentioned in my last report, there is a real need identified in Caradon for drop-in, flexible child-care facilities, which could be accessed by parents doing training courses, parents who need some ‘time out’; statutory agencies etc etc. I have met with Emma Clark and Emma Manning several times now, and they are compiling ‘evidence’ for a business plan.

Training and Development

We are hoping to organise a series of workshops on ‘effective committees’ and ‘How to be a good . . . . . (Chair, minute-taker, treasurer) etc. The difficulty lies in finding a trainer who knows his/her subject matter, but who can present it in an informal, fun, participative way.

If anyone has any ideas on this, please get in touch.

A self-evaluation scheme has been set up recently by the Projects Manager. It aims to encourage the stakeholders to take on the evaluation task. The quantitative data are collected by the individual projects within PHLN on a regular basis and monitored by the project management team. The qualitative data will be collected by the self-evaluation team which consists of five volunteers. It aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the PHLN projects and to find out whether the projects achieve their aims, objectives and targets. A training programme was devised and a series of training sessions were delivered to the volunteers between February and March 2002. On-going professional support is provided by the local consultant of the Evaluation Trust.

If you would like to participate in any of the 21 projects within the Penwith Healthy Living Network as a volunteer, please contact Dilys Down or Clive Harrold on 01736 330198.
