HEALTHY LIVING SMALL GRANTS AND HEALTHY LIVING PROJECT SCHEME
Throughout Cornwall and Isles of Scilly a huge amount of valuable and innovative work is being carried out within the Voluntary/Community Sector to promote the broader aspects of health and wellbeing throughout local communities. Many local groups are under great pressure to deliver important services with very limited resources. The Small Grants and the Healthy Living Project Schemes support this valued work and enable groups to achieve a specific piece of work that would otherwise be hard to secure funding for. This provides the opportunity to put great ideas into action to achieve real results for local people.
The Healthy Living Initiative offers the Small Grant Scheme (grants of up to £200) and the Healthy Living Project Scheme (grants up to £1,000) to community and voluntary groups who need funding to support an activity which will assist in promoting health within the community. Further financial support for these initiatives has been provided by the Duchy Health Charity.
In 2000/2001, both Schemes had the following three priorities. Proposals needed to identify which they were applying for:
The priorities may well differ for subsequent Schemes.
All projects must satisfy the following criteria:
This year the size and complexity of the application form has been significantly reduced, hopefully making it easier for everyone involved. It is important that projects are assessed against the criteria as set out above. To ensure that the appraisers have a clear understanding of the project and its heart and passion, telephone appraisals are now carried out with applicants. Officers of the Healthy Living Initiative then take this information to a Selection Panel who make the final decisions on all grants. The Panel comprises representatives from the voluntary sector, Health Promotion Service, Cornwall Community Health Council, Healthy Living Forums, Primary Care Organisations and community workers.

A full list of projects can be found on the Healthy Living Initiative website available through the Health Promotion Service at www.healthpromcornwall.org.
The Healthy Living Initiative proposes that the District Forums take on the responsibility of the Small Grants and the Healthy Living Project Schemes from next financial year. This would enable local people to decide on their own priorities and how the funds would be distributed. It would also free up the time of the Healthy Living Initiative Co-ordinator enabling her to provide more support to community groups for project development.

Bodmin Youth Project
"Does my bum look big in this?"
This project received a £1,000 Healthy Living Project Scheme grant
The grant was used to fund a drama production with the Small Scale Theatre Company and a group of young men aged 15-18. The production was based on health issues for young men including exam stress/mental health, personal health, sexual health, and testicular cancer.
The performers developed the production themselves based on their own ideas. This was not easy given the nature of the subject but in doing so they gained the ability to "open up" such sensitive issues. The audiences gained an awareness of health issues from their peers.
The numbers benefiting from the project were:-
5 young men aged 15-17 involved in the play
2 x Year 10 audiences (about 200 young people in each) at Wadebridge and Bodmin schools
3 more young men aged 16 involved in filming
The project was very effective. It has been described as the best piece of work with young men seen for years. The audiences were amused and shocked and several comments regarding the usefulness of the production have been received. The play hits hard using comedy but has an apparent serious message.
At present Small Scale are working with the group to turn the play into a short film, which can be purchased by schools around Cornwall.

Blackwood House provides care for the elderly residential, elderly mentally ill and day care clients.
The grant enabled a sensory garden to be built, which is suitable for disabled/wheelchair clients as well as the more mobile, and also suitable for people with mental health problems. The grant was spent on building materials, labour costs, trellis, plants and soils.
A great deal of interest has been shown by residents, staff and relatives.

Scope (Day Service)
£1,000 to enable clients to work with(MaDE)
Gladys Holman House is a residential and day-care centre under the auspices of SCOPE for clients with celebral palsy, the intention was for MaDE to work with clients and support staff over a period of six weeks to produce a piece of music, dance and drama for a Christmas celebration.
On 12 December 2001, the performance team presented their version of the Cornish story, The Mousehole Cat.
The holistic process from consultation, through workshops, into performances, has created opportunities for clients, careers and enablers, and artists to work together to create new music, dance and drama, with the occasional Cornish dance and Christmas carole.
In the words of one audience member;
"The enterprise, imagination and patience of all concerned made me feel very humble. EVERYBODY enjoyed not least the
audience.
TACKLING CANCER/CHD
The Beacon Community Regeneration Partnership:
Cooking for Life £1,000
The grant was used to provide a series of four intensive healthy eating cookery courses. These were specifically designed for families with young children and held at the Beacon Community Resource Centre, Falmouth.
Each course contained three sessions individually tailored to personal and home circumstances, existing skills and individual concerns.
All food, equipment and childcare was provided free of charge and the clients made between 2 and 5 dishes at each session to take home, together with recipe sheets and handouts.
Although only five clients attended the courses, many more have benefited at home, for example, children, partners and friends.
Falmouth Playgroup £1,000
The grant was used to organise a course of activities, which support the playgroup in the promotion and encouragement of healthy eating through working collaboratively and sharing ideas with the help of dieticians and health workers.
The aim was to build on the knowledge, skills and positive practices the families are currently using and to produce some guidelines which could be helpful to new parents and carers joining the group.
The course and activities have resulted in increased confidence, social skills, knowledge and awareness for the parents and children. A number of parents have been involved in facilitating these sessions, and this has led them to ideas about employment as well as family health.
The playgroup noted that the principles and practices would be incorporated into regular playgroup activities once regular funding could be established.

Calstock Under Fives
This project received £120 Small Grant
Calstock under fives is a charity run organisation, OFSTED approved. It runs 4 mornings a week with 3 paid members of staff. The Group has been running for about 25 years and at present has approximately 35 children on the register.
This grant paid for 3 swimming trips to Lux Park enabling many children and parents to enjoy a swim and it provided an excursion for villagers enabling them to meet new friends and build self confidence.
The project was so successful that further fundraising will be undertaken so that the scheme can continue.
Falls Prevention
Motivation and Movement
Due to the expertise and skills within the Health Promotion Service it was agreed that a member of staff be freed to take on the role of part-time Co-ordinator for this Healthy Living Initiative project. The Co-ordinator promotes stimulation and activities with older people through care homes, luncheon clubs and community groups. This complements and builds on existing schemes including Bones in Mind and Falls Prevention (see Linked Projects page 16). The project offers resources and skills to people enabling them to continue with activities after the Co-ordinator has withdrawn. The Co-ordinator also provides a central point where information and advice can be obtained along with a bank of resources, which can be loaned to groups to extend the range of activities available.
Currently the project is working on the First Step Fund, providing small grants up to £200 to help local people set up Walking for Health groups. There is ample evidence supporting the health benefits of walking. Although 80% of people think that they are sufficiently active, 70% do not take part in enough physical activity to maintain their health. The benefits of walking are numerous and relate to physical health, physical ability, and psychological health.
