Volunteering at King Edward Mine

King Edward Mine volunteering

Work to develop King Edward Mine into a museum started over 25 years ago. The Museum has been developed, and continues to be developed and managed by a team of volunteers.

With a large group of Grade II* Listed buildings, artefacts, machinery and some 20 acres of land there is always more to do than there are people to do it.

We do everything from building steam engines through welcoming the public in the shop to cutting the grass!

As things operate at the moment, Sunday morning is the time when most of the team are on site. Having said that volunteers tend to identify with particular projects and often come on site in small groups during the week as decided amongst themselves.

We have recently had a major ecological survey of the site and we intend proactively to manage the area in order to encourage a variety of habitats some particularly unique to mine sites. There is much work to be done here.

Another area where we need additional support is manning the shop/reception.

We would welcome new colleagues to the Museum. If you have the spare time and think you could help in any way on site, we'd love to hear from you. No prior experience or knowledge is required, however a sense of humour is mandatory.   You'll find it a very friendly place and it would be entirely up to you how much time you give.
