Step by Step is one of eleven projects funded by Big Lottery to help raise standards of health and wellbeing in the South West Region.
The Step by Step in Cornwall project will be working in four districts within the county: Carrick, Caradon, North Cornwall and Restormel and will be focusing work in St Austell, Wadebridge, Launceston, Callington, Gunnislake, Falmouth and the Malabar Estate in Truro.
This work will stem from working alongside local resident associations, mainly in social housing areas but will also be aware of and very keen to use as many methods as possible to obtain that initial engagement with individuals within local communities. This may include helping people to organise local events, providing resources and equipment or by just being there, with a friendly ear and a cup of tea.
The project has two workers: The Community Health Development Worker (Nicky Harrison) and The Health Trainer (Sam Jones) who will provide support, encouragement and information to empower local people to take an active part in their local communities, thereby building confidence and self esteem, so that individuals are in more of a position to make healthier choices for themselves.
The Health Trainer will also provide a one to one support for individuals by offering them practical support and help to aid them in changing their behaviour to achieve their own goals.
