Protective Behaviours

What is Protective Behaviours?
Protective Behaviours is a a practical down to earth
approach to personal
safety and developing
self-esteem.
It is a process which encourages self-empowerment and brings
with it the skills to avoid being victimised.
This is achieved by helping people recognise and trust their
intuitive feelings (early warning signs) and to develop
strategies for self-protection.
The Protective Behaviours process encourages an adventurous
approach to life which satisfies the need for fun and
excitement without violence and fear.
Protective Behaviours has at its heart to universal themes:
Theme 1 - We all have the right to feel safe all of the time
Theme 2 - There is nothing so awful or small that we can't talk about it with someone
PBs is preferable to, and infinititely more effective than, approaches to personal safety based on 'Stranger Danger' and would be an effective addition to every school PSHE programme.
With its focus on feelings PBs compliments SEAL and CT work in the classroom and can be a good way to involve parents and carers.
