Criteria
1 - Strategic Planning of Health Education
within the School
|
There should
be evidence that the whole school is actively
involved in understanding and supporting the
concept of reducing health inequalities and
supporting social inclusion. There are
ways in which schools achieve this:
The schools needs a steering group whose membership
includes members of the whole school community,
including Parents, Pupils, Non-teaching staff
(NTS), members of the school Senior Management
Team (SMT) and members of the local community.
Health Education and activities are identified
in the School Improvement Plan either implicitly
or more preferably in an explicit way. During
the development or renewal process of school
policies, that support and affect the health
of pupils, there ought to be a consultation process
with teachers, governors, parents and were appropriate
with pupils.
Mechanisms need to be developed that include
pupils in running the school. These mechanisms
may be: whole class councils and school councils,
circle time, a student forum, focus groups or
questionnaires. All need to have a formal process
for feedback to the students for the school to
acknowledge their input.
The school should have a named co-ordinator
with a recognised responsibility for a planned
development of Health within the school. This
should be supported by non-contact time for the
school Coordinator, they need to be included
in the school's decision-making process.
Where there is a developed and agreed set of
values and attitudes the school needs to promote
this and describe the process it used to develop
these.
Schools need to establish health links with
other schools in order to develop a consistent
message and provide a support framework for providing
health education and where appropriate share
good practice.
Schools would need to be aware of local and
national health issues and integrate them into
the life of the school.
It is necessary for a school to develop a code
of practice for working with outside agencies
in order that agencies understand the requirements
of the protocols in the school and the programme
they may be contributing to. The agenda of the
visitor needs to be discussed and made clear.
Every school that is a healthy school has an
agreed procedure for providing attractive sources
of water made freely available to pupils and
staff.
