Criteria
5 - Emotional Health and Well-being
|
In order for the school to meet the criteria
of emotional health and well-being the CHSS require
evidence that there is a school ethos based on
the promotion of mutual respect. This may be
achieved by activities that demonstrate a whole
school understanding that the act of participation
in school community life helps people develop
a sense of self-worth and enhances mental well-being.
The school will also need a range of policies
that emphasise respect for others. That the school
has some form of student body leadership such
as a school council where pupils are able to
contribute to the life of the school. And that
there are opportunities for pupils to take practical
responsibility and be involved in decision-making.
The school needs to ensure that there are opportunities
provided for pupils' views to inform the PSHE/Cit
curriculum and that these inform the development
of activities that support their emotional health
and well-being. Members of staff need to have
access to training on the content and process
for PSHE/Cit education were it impacts on the
emotional health and well-being of the pupils.
The school has a policy and a whole school code
of practice for behaviour that is clear on the
methods employed to tackle bullying. That these
methods are owned understood and implemented
by all members of the school community.
Support for school staff needs to be identified
and strategies developed and implemented with
regular monitoring for effectiveness. Offering
staff the opportunity to impact on the support
given - the emotional health needs of the school
staff have an important part to play in the development
of an emotionally healthy school.
There should be a welcoming environment for
pupils, teachers and visitors with methods for
identifying to visitors and the role of each
member of staff.
