Criteria
6 - Food and Eating
|
The school is required to adopt a whole school
approach to food and nutrition which promotes
the importance of healthier eating. The school
needs to have a School Nutrition Action Group
(SNAG) which includes in its membership parents,
pupils and non-teaching staff and a member of
the senior management team.
The school has included education on healthier
eating and basic food safety in the taught curriculum.
And there is healthy food provided and promoted
at break times, lunch and at any out of school
time clubs in order to support the curriculum.
This can be done by presenting consistent informed
messages about healthy eating, for example the
types of food on offer in vending machines, tuck
shops, and at lunchtime.
The school helps children to choose and eat
a healthy balanced meal at lunchtime through
a variety of strategies such as the lay out of
the choices in the canteen, reward systems and
competitions.
Oral health is supported by the healthy eating
strategy and there is information available and
curriculum support given about the importance
of oral health. A whole school approach to improve
the oral health within the school community is
evident. Links are made with external agencies
to support practice.
Parents are involved and supported to encourage
healthier eating through consultation. The National
Strategy concerning five fruit or vegetable portions
per day is promoted. The school has an awareness
that the role of food and eating has, and some
of the problems concerning food within the wider
context of health and well-being. Such as fizzy
drinks and the impact on bone density, eating
disorders, and the impact on the body of too
much sugar or fat.
