The Government Obesity Strategy (Jan 2008): Healthy Weight, Healthy lives: A Cross-Government strategy for England

This strategy supports the creation of a healthy society - from early years, to schools and food, from sport and physical activity to planning, transport and the health service.

It will bring together employers, individuals and communities to promote children’s health and healthy food; build physical activity into our lives; support health at work; and provide the incentives more widely to promote health. It will also provide effective treatment and support when people become overweight or obese.

Some thoughts on the NCMP

Whenever I think about the NCMP and the issues that have arisen in Cornwall (and of course elsewhere) the words 'Curate's Egg' and 'missed opportunity' come to mind.

The CHSP are keen to encourage schools to take part but mindful of the reasons whey schools have opted out and the very strong feelings some schools and head teachers have about the need for it, the process and the pressure to participate.

We support it because it has the potential to provide much needed data and informaiton both to highlight for more work to be done to help children and families to lead healthier lives and to show just how effective any interventions are.

This is partly self-interest - HS schools is currently fighting for a future and I know that what we have to offer is good and worthwhile and I truly believe we can be a part of the solution for tackling some of the key health issues facing us... It is also a desire to see that scarce funding is used to best effect and that we have real evaluation of the work we (and others) will do.

I spend a great deal of my time bemoaning the lack of reliable data about everything from childhood injury data to realistic insight to children's emotional health and well being... at a small but significant level the NCMP can make a real contribution.

CHSP Support for Schools

As CHSP coordinator I don't want to add to the pressure schools feel they are facing to take part BUT simply make an offer - if you think it would help in any way I would gladly come to school to talk to heads, staff, governors, parents, even pupils to say why I believe it is worthwhile. I am also happy to hear your views and listen to comments, suggestions etc.

Please contact me if you would like more information.

National Analysis of the weighing and measuring of pupils in England 2005 - 2006

SUMMER 2007

The weighing and measuring exercise continues to be a little controversial for a number of reasons this year but CHSP would like to encourage all schools to take part as the programme is vital to the achievement of the desire to reduce childhood obesity which is fundamental to the government's public health agenda in Choosing health and of the aims of the HS programme.

If there is anything the CHSP can do to support the process this year, including offering information for parents and carers or providing links to the classroom please let us know.
