“All schools are expected to have a policy which sets out the school's role in relation to all drug matters. Those without a drug policy should develop one as a matter of urgency.” (Drugs: Guidance, DfES, 2004)
In healthy schools we will look for a policy that is up to date and conforms with the latest guidance (currently Drugs: Guidance for Schools DfES/0092/2004) and which has been developed in consultation with parents and carers and pupils (or which you plan to consult on when it is next due for review) and is relevant to the needs of the school.
The DfES Guidance has a model policy framework to guide your policy development download a checklist to ensure all the key areas are covered in your policy.
There is a model primary school policy to download from the NAHT website (or download a copy here)
We've had a go at developing our own 'user friendly' policy framework for schools:
1. primary and a do you really need policy doc?
2. secondary
Tell us what you think and add comments or suggestions for improvements,
Download a copy of some guidance from the EAL school support website which will help you develop a policy or check your existing one.
Not sure about what incidents could be in the primary school? Download a prompt sheet to get you thinking!
