More about Criterion 4 - Substance Use and Misuse
|
Drugs: Guidance for Schools (DfES/0092/2004) is the key document for schools to use when developing policies and planning drugs education. It is available to download here (click on the link above) or can be viewed as part of the Teachernet website.
There is also a summary of the guidance for headteachers and governors.
DEVELOPING POLICIES
Schools need to have:
A substance education policy and a drugs incidents policy. Guidance for each is given in the DfES guidance doc. and help is on hand from Wendy McDonald the Schools Drugs Advisor 0n 01209 - 313419.
Wendy can help with advice and information on all aspects of policy development.
DRUGS EDUCATION SUPPORT
The CHSP team can also provide help and support for schools looking to develop curriculum work and introduce drugs education work.
Wendy McDonald can work with secondary and primary schools and Kate Pordage will work with primary schools. We can do work around the CHESS and DICE packs and support schools through our teacher obsevation project (see below) or help schools make the links between drugs education, wider PSHE, work on SEBS and Circle or as part of a wider risk education approach.
TEACHER OBSERVATION PROJECT (supported by the DfES)
CHSP can help the development and delivery of drugs education in the school by supporting a teacher observation / peer mentoring project. We can work with PSHE co-ordinator to demonstrate good practice (we are particularly keen to demonstrate how the CHESS and DICE packs can be effectively used). The teacher then cascades training, classroom support, teacher observations, team teaching etc. to the rest of the staff (and we can help with supply costs, INSET and staff meetings).
or more information contact Kate or Wendy on 01209 - 313419 (or use the e mail links above)
