TASK (Travel Awareness School Kit)

Get on TASK

The Cornwall County Council Travel Awareness Team have just published their Travel Awareness School Kit (TASK) which the Cornwall Healthy Schools Programme helped in the development of.

TASK is intended to be a self help tool for planning and conducting Safer Routes to School projects and School Travel Plans.

Copies are available free of charge to all schools in Cornwall. To request a copy of TASK for your school contact the Travel Awareness Team on 01872 - 322000 or e mail [email protected].

The CHSP has provided further information about the links between TASK and Healthy Schools as well TASKs links to Every Child Matters and Choosing Health (the public health white paper) which can be accessed here.

Some of the impacts on childrens' physical and emotional well-being that research (and common sense!) has observed as fewer and fewer children undertake independent travel to school or elsewhere.

  • Tackling key issues - bullying and Personal Protective Behaviours

One of the reasons many children (and often their parents) are reluctant to walk to school is fear of bullying or fear of stranger danger. Often the fear is out of all proportion to reality but it can still be a powerful disincentive. Anti-Bullying Cornwall (ABC) can help schools understand bullying and how to tackle it. Personal Protective Behaviours is a powerful strategy for teaching children (and adults) about personal safety which is much, much better than 'Stranger Danger'. Download a brief introduction to PBs (pdf file) or visit the PBs UK website at www.protectivebehaviours.co.uk

Where does TASK fit in with the Primary National Strategy, Choosing Health, Every Child Matters and other areas of the school curricukum / school development? A brief overview.
