Core Theme 1 : Personal, Social & Health Education

Do you know about the newly set up PSHE Association? www.pshe-association.org.uk/

This core theme covers:

  • Personal, social and health education, including sex and relationship education and drug education (including alcohol, tobacco and volatile substance abuse)
  • PSHE provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their lives.

This is possibly the most challenging Core Theme but one that provides much of the foundation for Healthy Schools Status.

There is a increasing body of practical guidance and support (for example from the QCA to develop and improve PSHE across all the Key Stages.

In the primary school the implementation of the Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) can provide a substantial part of a planned programme of PSHE (and provide a lot towards Core Theme 4 - EHWB!) BUT not all. The programme needs to include more of the knowledge aspects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco education, Sex and Relationships education and Citizenship.

We are currently in the process of the developing a PSHE mapping exercise to bring together all these elements for example showing how parts of our CHESS resource is covered by SEAL, and how SEAL maps to the national PSHE framework (pdf document download) and how Citizenship fits in...

Secondary schools can also get advice and support on planning a PSHE programme contact Kate Pordage.
