Safe Places Relaunch October 2015
The Health Promotion Service in partnership with Cornwall People First and Cornwall Police Constabulary are relaunching the Cornwall Safe Places Scheme in October 2015 during National Hate Crime Awareness week. The scheme helps people with learning disabilities and people who are on the autistic spectrum, if they feel scared or at risk while they are out and about in the community and require support. People who might need to use Safe Places carry a Safe Places card with emergency contact details on it. This could be the details of the individual’s carers or family members. If they need help they can go to public places, like shops, community centres and libraries that have a Safe Places sticker in their window and ask the staff for help.
The scheme is being relaunched with the help of the CHAMPs (Cornwall Health and Making Partnerships) team; Ben Law one of the CHAMPs says that the scheme “Is great and makes me feel safe when I am out and about”.
Adrian Quest (Adult liaison for Learning disabilities in the Health Promotion Service) said that “We feel that the scheme is invaluable, as it allows people with a learning disability to maintain their independence, whilst knowing that there is a safe place that they can go to for help if they feel threatened or a problem arises”.
The scheme has already been featured in The Cornishman after the scheme in Penzance was relaunched. The Full launch was held in Truro on Friday Oct 16th, we signed up the Hall for Cornwall to the scheme on the day along with other local businesses. Later in the day we were interviewed on BBC Radio Cornwall with Councillor Jim Mckenna and Colin Gameson the Police Diversity Officer. The scheme was launched during National Hate Crime Awareness week as we are aiming to draw awareness to Mate crime which people with a learning disability are particularly vulnerable too.
