Health Champion News
On Thursday 6th November, Volunteer Cornwall hosted it’s 6th annual event for Cornwall Celebrates Volunteering Awards Ceremony, held at the Atlantic Hotel, Newquay. This event celebrates the many varying volunteering roles throughout Cornwall and also the amazing volunteers themselves that fulfil these roles. There are many different categories that volunteers are nominated into and from this 3 are shortlisted and invited to the event.
Health Promotion nominated 4 volunteers this year and fortuitously all 4 were shortlisted and walked away with awards to celebrate them for their amazing work they do.
Derek - Personal Development Volunteer
As well as being a full-time carer and challenging his own health over the years Derek found time to support our Bude Health Trainer. He has made an amazing improvement to his own health and wellbeing and in turn is supporting others within the Bude community through 2 groups he is running:
Men’s group is on a Monday 2:00 – 3:00pm at Rosie’s Café, and Happy Hour and a Half on Thursday’s 10:00 – 11:30am at the Olive Tree.
Anyone can join, 16 years and over.
If you are interested to attend please contact Derek 07971 885 624
Heather – Health Volunteer
Heather has proved that out of something negative, comes something positive. She is giving up a substantial amount of her week to support others to improve their health, as well as getting participants to and from the sessions to enable their health to be improved also. She’s an amazing reliable pair of hands that we are incredibly lucky to have as part of the team. Heather leads a Pool walk every Tuesday starting at 10:00am outside the Pool Health Centre. Flat level ground, just turn up.
Richard – Community Volunteer
One of the projects Richard supports is Soul Food Kitchen, which involves the homeless or people in housing crisis getting together and cooking good healthy meals and enables them to sit down together and eat as a group. Richard has been able to share his chef skills with the group making various dishes and shared techniques e.g. making pasta from scratch.
Without Richard the project would not be the success it is today, his personal contribution has been incredible and the project participant’s value and respect his input and commitment. Well done Richard.
Chris – Cultural Volunteer
Helen Page the Redruth Health Trainer nominated Chris Bennett for his hard work and commitment in setting up the Understanding Art group, despite his poor health. The art group is for people with long term health conditions to learn and relax in a safe and supportive environment. Chris was awarded Highly Commended in the Culture category. The group meet every Thurs morning in Redruth and for more info call Chris on 01209 821917.
This event is an amazing insight into the work that volunteers do throughout Cornwall and their individual personal journey’s behind this leave you in awe. Well done to all volunteers throughout Cornwall, without you the County would be in chaos!
