Criteria
4 - Substance Use and Misuse
|
The school needs to have a developed an informed
approach to drug misuse supported by the whole
school community and in partnership with other
relevant agencies this would be evidenced by:
The school having a drug education policy established
by governors, in consultation with staff parents
and pupils (where appropriate), and in line with
national guidelines which demonstrates an awareness
of local priorities.
Also the school would have a policy that demonstrates
a clear set of procedures for dealing with incidents
that doesn't contradict the drug education policy
but complements its ethos.
There needs to be evidence that there is a whole
school awareness of local and national drug strategies
which address the health needs of the whole school
community.
There needs to be consultation and review of
when, where and what drug education (including
smoking and alcohol) is taught throughout the
school, including the requirements of the formal
curriculum. There will be a framework for monitoring
and evaluating the school's curriculum and other
related events/activities concerned with substance
misuse and use
The school needs to have discussions about levels
of comfort and explore the attitudes of staff
and Governors' towards the delivery of the Drugs
Education Curriculum. Staff need an understanding
of the subject that will meet their statutory
obligations. There will be liaison with appropriate
external agencies in the community to support
practice concerning the best model of pupil consultation
and subject delivery.
The school needs to be offering staff the opportunity
to take up training and awareness raising opportunities
and offering governors and parents information
about attitudes and drug awareness on a regular
planned basis.
